Description
Due to recent security changes in Apple’s OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) release, unexpected behavior may occur when auto-activating or displaying Postscript Type 1 fonts within some applications.
Symptoms:
- Active Postscript fonts do not show up in application menus
- PostScript fonts may not auto-activate when a document is opened, causing document text to display in the wrong correct typeface – in most cases it will display in the application’s default typeface.
- Changing from one Postscript font to another that has the same name may cause all text to display with the omega: “Ω” character.
- Changing from one Postscript font to another may cause the selected text to be removed
Note: This issue does not affect other font types such as TrueType and OpenType.
The following applications are affected when using Type 1 Postscript fonts:
- QuarkXPress (versions 9, 10 and 2015)
- Adobe Creative Suite (versions 5 and 6)
- Legacy Carbon Mac OS X applications
Solution
A default installation of Suitcase Fusion is not affected by this issue.
There are two ways you can run into the issue:
- By adding Type 1 PostScript fonts “in-place” from a folder that is not owned by your Mac OS X user account (such as a network folder).
- By moving your Suitcase Fusion font vault outside of your home folder.
Use one of the following solutions to resolve it:
- The recommended solution is to add your fonts to the Suitcase Fusion font vault. By default, the vault is located under your home folder and will not be affected by this issue.
To change Suitcase Fusion to use the vault for font storage:
- Open Suitcase Fusion.
- Select Suitcase Fusion 6 > Preferences in the top menu bar.
- Under the heading “Font Vault Options” click on “Copy added fonts to the Vault.”
- You will now need to remove your PostScript fonts from Suitcase Fusion, then add them back.
- Continue to add your fonts in place, but store them under your user folder. Create a new folder under
Mac HD > Users > [you] and store them there.
To change the location of the Suitcase Fusion font vault:
- Copy your font vault from the default location to a folder under your user home folder. The default location is
/Users/[you]/Library/Extensis/Suitcase Fusion/Suitcase Fusion.fontvault.
- Open Suitcase Fusion.
- Select Suitcase Fusion 6 > Preferences in the top menu bar.
- Click the “Type Core” tab.
- Click “Select…” and select the location that you copied your vault to.
